What Are SP-DATEN Files?

SP-DATEN (Steuer-Programm-Daten, or control program data) are BMW's official ECU data files used by diagnostic and programming software to communicate with your car's modules. Think of them as the language dictionary between the software and the car — without up-to-date SP-DATEN, your diagnostic tool may not recognise newer ECUs, miss fault codes, or be unable to perform certain programming operations.

SP-DATEN files are used by:

  • INPA — for E Series fault code reading and live data
  • NCS Expert — for E Series coding
  • WINKFP — for E Series ECU programming/flashing
  • ISTA-P — for E and R Series programming

They are separate from ISTA+ (which uses its own internal database) and are primarily relevant to E Series vehicles and the legacy diagnostic suite.

What's Inside an SP-DATEN Package?

An SP-DATEN release is a versioned folder set containing:

  • DATEN — ECU definitions, fault code tables, and live data parameters
  • SGDAT — programming data for WINKFP ECU flashing
  • SWTCHAR — software characteristic files used by NCS Expert for coding
  • NETTRACE / GRPFILES — network and grouping files for module identification

BMW releases updated SP-DATEN versions periodically (e.g. V68, V70, V72). Each new version adds support for newer ECU variants, fixes data errors, and expands coding options.

Do You Need to Update Your SP-DATEN?

It depends on what you're doing and which version you currently have installed. You likely need an SP-DATEN update if:

  • INPA or NCS Expert can't identify a specific module on your car
  • You're getting "ECU not found" or "data file missing" errors
  • You've retrofitted a newer module (e.g. upgraded head unit, added a module from a later build date)
  • You want access to coding options that weren't available in your current version
  • Your current SP-DATEN version is more than 2–3 releases behind the latest

If your tools are working correctly and you're not hitting any of the above issues, your current SP-DATEN version is likely fine.

SP-DATEN vs PSdZData: What's the Difference?

This is a common point of confusion:

  • SP-DATEN — used by the legacy E Series suite (INPA, NCS Expert, WINKFP, ISTA-P). Covers E Series vehicles.
  • PSdZData — used by ISTA-P for programming and by ISTA+ for certain operations. More relevant to early F Series vehicles, and required for ISTA-P to function correctly.

If you're running ISTA-P for Early F Series programming, you need PSdZData, not SP-DATEN. If you're running INPA/NCS Expert on an E Series, you need SP-DATEN.

How to Install SP-DATEN Updates

  1. Download the SP-DATEN package and extract it to a folder (e.g. C:\EDIABAS\ECU or wherever your existing DATEN folder is located)
  2. Replace the existing DATEN, SGDAT, and SWTCHAR folders with the new versions — back up the old ones first
  3. Open INPA or NCS Expert and verify the software recognises the updated data (check the version string in the title bar or about screen)
  4. Test by connecting to your car and confirming module identification works correctly

Important: Do not mix SP-DATEN versions across folders. Use a complete, matched release to avoid data conflicts that can cause incorrect coding or failed programming.

Which SP-DATEN Version Should You Use?
